The Mass Extinctions

The meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs hit in what is now the Gulf of Mexico.

For the mass extinction we are in, we’re going to locate where the last white rhino died and put that on the map.

The first mass extinction was around 444 Million years ago. The second one was 365 M years ago and is called the Devonian Extinction as many of the fossils from this era were found by Devonian Mary Anning. In particular many tropical marine species went extinct. The next one was 250 M years ago and was the most deadly one. It affected many vertebrates and when something like 95% of species are believed to have gone extinct. That was followed by one 210 M years ago when many vertebrate species went extinct and  dinosaurs began to flourish. The Cretaceous – Tertiary extinction was 65 M years ago and is the most famous one today, being known for killing out 50% of plants and animals , including the dinosaurs.

In learning about this with mom and Dad I have sourced from a book on Ecology, three documentaries including a David Attenborough documentary, linked in another post here, a short documentary on Mary Anning linked here, and a documentary on the extinction of the dinosaurs. We also read an article from the Natural History Museum in NYC.
