How I write an essay

I am working on writing an essay about mass extinction but the process I have, because of my dyslexia, is different to most people writing essays. I start by researching my topic and then I get Dad to interview me about it, using rehearsed questions. We use a transcription website called Otter to record our interviews as it gives me text which I can then copy and paste into a word document. I then tidy up the interview transcription and reformat in my own words into an essay format. This is easier for me than just writing an essay. The interview itself usually takes about a half hour and typically creates a 6-page transcription. Editting it usually takes half a day to a day of work and I typically end up with a two or three page essay. When I write an essay this way, I often feel the content and structure of the essay is better than it would be without doing it this way.

    Livi,

I love that you write essays this way. I actually use a similar process for developing video scripts for many clients. We interview them usually 15-30 minutes a piece. Transcribe the interviews, highlight the best “sound bites,” and then weave everything together into a script moving the pieces around until we get the best possible picture. Then we edit the clips together into a final piece, add music, and voila – happy clients. Maybe you can come work for Eddy Alexander one day. Its a growing family business. Regardless, keep writing it helps unpack your thoughts and whether you do it for fun or for work its a skill you’ll never regret having developed. You are doing great! Love Aunt Jenn. PS. Do you like Audio Books? Lilly and I are on a real kick with Nancy Drew lately…

Wow! This is really a very cool process. I wonder what types of rehearsed questions you use? Also, What type of mass extinction, or are you pondering the possibilities? I find it difficult sometimes to compose my thoughts in writing too because I am very careful with my word selection and how to frame a message. It is much easier for me to edit existing text similar to your process too.
